Facts About Japanese Clothing
Significance
Japanese businessmen wear suits to work while businesswomen will wear a Western-style dress or pantsuit. During leisure time, the Japanese will wear jeans and T-shirts.
Identification
The Japanese will still wear traditional clothes like the kimono during holidays and other important ceremonies. Many older women will still wear a kimono around the house. During the summer, men will wear what is known as a jinbei, a traditional outfit that is loose to beat the heat.
Effects
Japan is subject to strange fashion crazes. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, many girls would wear what is known as the "Ganguro" fashion. They would tan their skin dark, bleach their hair, wear silver makeup and wear tie-dyed sarongs with a mini-skirt and platform shoes.
Geography
The more extreme fashions in modern Japan are found in the city centers, especially Tokyo and Kyoto.
Warning
Trends appear and die quickly in Japan. In the past 10 years, fashions such as the cowboy, the maid and the Gothic Lolita have come and gone.
